Well, it looks like it’s finally Fall in the Southern California desert! After more than 120 days of temperatures over 100 degrees, it is finally cool enough to get outside and actually enjoy the experience. It feels so good that I created this no equipment runner’s workout that you can do outdoors, either on its own or on an easy run day.  All you need to bring is sunscreen!

Let’s Get Outside!

I really love outdoor workouts. Being outside is my happy place and I love that I am surrounded by the mostly silent desert, majestic mountains, and blue skies. I’ll bet I could get a class together for other outdoor enthusiasts without a problem. I’m sure this woman, who I saw doing her own workout, would be there!

Of course, not everyone has easy access to the great outdoors. Fortunately, all you need is a park, empty lot, or other open space to get it done. You can even, ahem, do it in the gym. I should call it the no excuses workout! You really can do it anywhere.

Part of the joy of getting outdoors in the Fall is that no longer do I have to hide from the sun. Yes, I’ve been out there all summer long, hiding in the shadows before the sun comes up, but now I can greet that sun happily because I know the warmth it brings will be warming me up instead of burning me up.

It’s a little ironic, but as I’m loving this new cooler weather, I actually need a little something to keep me warm! For that, I’ve been turning to prAna’s Cozy Up line! The Cozy Up line is made from a hemp blend. Industrial hemp is incredibly sustainable because it needs little water to grow, grows more fiber per acre than cotton, and is not hard on soil. In fact, hemp actually puts nutrients back into the soil!

I also learned that hemp inhibits bacteria because bacteria will not grow on hemp. When it’s blended with polyester, it actually kills bacteria! No Equipment Runner’s Workout

As I said, this no equipment runner’s workout is great to do on the trails, in a park, in your home, or even in the gym. All you need is a rock (or bench) and a clear space. Perform this workout in a circuit, doing all the exercises in order, then repeating for a total of two to three sets.

The focus is lower body, including hips and glutes, and core. This no equipment runner’s workout targets these important muscles to help you run better and avoid injury. Not a runner? That’s okay! Non-runners will still benefit from this fun and functional workout.

Warm up with a short run or walk to find your perfect workout location. Perform each exercise for 60 seconds (60 seconds on each side for unilateral exercises), moving straight through from one to another. Take a minute break, then repeat.

As always, be sure to squeeze your glutes, engage your core, and move slowly through the movement. Have fun!
